This study is aimed to evaluate the presence and distribution of Perfluorinated Compounds (PFCs) in Yellowlegged
gull eggs (Larus michahellis) collected from 8 National or Natural Parks from the Iberian Peninsula. In
each colony, 12 eggs were randomly collected and pooled from 3 areas of the colony and analyzed using liquid–
solid extraction and liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. Perfluorooctanate
sulfonate (PFOS) was the only compound detected in the eggs and its presence was higher in the colonies situated
in NE Iberian Peninsula due to the more industrial and mass urbanization in this area compared to the
SW Mediterranean or Atlantic colonies. Accordingly, the Medes site, followed by the Ebro Delta and Columbretes,
all situated in the NW Mediterranean coast, contained the highest PFOS levels (40.5–54.0 ng/g-ww).
In all other colonies, PFOS was detected at levels of 10.1–18.6 ng/g-ww. Egg shell biometry was studied and it
was found that the presence of PFOS did not affect the development of the egg.
Yellow-legged gulls breed in high density areas, and the condition-dependent hypothesis suggests that birds with high physical condition can obtain breeding benefits in high-density areas because they are able to pay off the energetic costs of aggressive behaviour and territory defence. This study and others showed a relationship between aggressiveness or copulation behaviour and nest-density during the pre-laying period in gulls. The link between density and behaviour can be explained by the strong competition for space and mates. Testosterone regulates mate behaviour and can play an important role in the condition-dependent hypothesis. We tested the effects of testosterone implants on male breeding behaviour. In a high-density colony, testosterone-implanted male yellow-legged gulls showed higher aggression and copulation frequencies than controls during the courtship period. In addition, these testosterone-treated birds acquired larger territories than the controls. Thus, a high testosterone level can increase individual fitness in densely populated areas given the benefits derived, on the one hand, from a large territory and, on the other, from an increased copulation rate that would guarantee the male's paternity of the chicks born in his own nest. Since testosterone increases energetic requirements, Only high-quality males would be able to pay off the costs of high levels of testosterone and so obtain the benefits of breeding in high-density areas. Testosterone could therefore provide a proximate mechanism regulating nest density in gull colonies.
Erodium maritimum L. is an annual species presenting heterogeneous, sometimes very small, and distant populations, distributed along a discontinuous coastal strip of the European Atlantic and the central and western Mediterranean basin. The aim of this study is to investigate genetic variation and geographic structure changes across its large distribution. Fourteen populations of E. maritimum were studied using AFLP fingerprints, together with their population sizes, reproductive systems and flower visitors. AFLP markers revealed the genetic structure of the species to be weak. Many individuals from one population clustered together with those of other populations, showing a high degree of genetic admixture. Despite having a self-compatible reproductive system, populations (especially the largest ones) showed high levels of genetic polymorphism, and the majority of genetic variation was contained within populations. The low genetic structure suggests high levels of gene flow, which might be explained through the dispersability of the species' fruits. Finally, recommendations are provided for management strategies to facilitate the conservation of this endangered species.
vascular ameazada Linaria arenaria DC., Rumex rupestris Le Gall. e Erodium
Especies Ameazadas (DOGA, 2007).
As especies tratadas foron obxecto dunha mostraxe intensiva no territorio do Parque
Nacional das Illas Atlánticas. Presentamos como resultados a cartografía dos núcleos
que compoñen as poboacións nos diversos arquipélagos do Parque Nacional. O informe
analizando a evolución das súas poboacións no territorio do Parque Nacional.
